Tough Love - Mom Busts Son

Being a parent can be a joy, but it's also a tough job. When a teen is rebelling it is often hard to get through to them. Sometimes a tough approach is the only one that works.

This is what I call exercising tough love.

Bridge Over Trouble Water

Today is one of those days. You know the kind that I'm talking about. I wish life could be full of happiness, but it' not. Today I just want to go back to bed and crawl under the covers.

There'd be days like this, Momma said.
Momma said there'd be days like this,
There'd be days like this my momma said.

I just need to remind myself of that every once in a while. Especially on days like today, when a certain offspring has made me want to run away from home.

I am in the most depressing of moods. I feel like crying. Have you ever had one of those days, where you take every thing said to you, as an insult. You're just waiting for someone to say something to you, so you'd have an excuse to go postal on them.

If I've been snarky with you this week and chances are good that if we talked, I have been. I apologize.

Losing a child is the hardest thing that any parent has to go through. When you loose a child, you attend to become over protective of your other children for fear it will happen again.

My daughter died. I can’t bear the thought of losing another child.

I love my children more than anything, but it feels like that love just isn’t getting through.

These days the gap between my oldest daughter and I feels unbridgeable. I’m reminded of the song “love can build a bridge” by Naomi & Wynonna Judd.

I feel like we’ve come to that bridge, but there is a toll that one must pay to cross it. I am willing to pay whatever it takes to get across that bridge to her.

Sometimes, I wish that I could run away. I long for the harmony that was once apart of this household. I feel worn out trying to get her to understand that the relationships that she is putting herself in are unhealthy ones.

There'd be weeks like this, Momma said.
Momma said there'd be weeks like this,
There'd be weeks like this my momma said.

If only children were born with an instruction manual. I know that there will be rougher waters ahead. I just hope that she crosses that bridge. I know that I'll be here waiting on the other side, when and if she does cross it.

Women Sex Abusers Face Double Standards

In courtrooms nationwide this month, at least seven women — four of them teachers — have been charged or sentenced for having sex with boys, mostly teenagers. One of the women is pregnant. Read full article

Just last week, I was discussing this very topic with an individual. He believed that women who sexually abuse, were far and few between. He is wrong.

This is a highly emotional topic. Worldnetdaily.com compiled a list of women who have been accused or convicted of having illegal sexual activity with children. I remain shocked and angered by this disturbing imformation. Yet there are a greater number more cases then this, that don’t even see the light of day. There should be a cause for concern here. It would appear that there are some double standards being played by the judicial system.

The sentences that women receive for sexual crimes, are no where in line with those that a male would receive.

English Wikipedia reaches one million articles

Congratulations to Wikipedia. Today, at 23:09 UTC, wikipedia published their one millionth article. Wikipedia the free encyclopedia has become the second-most visited reference site on the internet. Parenting Teens

I’ve read several comments regarding taking to your kids openly about sex. My husband and I have always talked very openly to our children about sex. One thing that we’ve always believed in is keeping the lines of communication open. We take an active role in their lives and the truth is that it doesn’t matter how active you are in their lives. Our children are bound to make the odd unhealthy decision. We all did as teens.

There are a great number of people that believe if parents educate their children that they are less likely to make unhealthy choices. That's a bunch of hog wash. It just isn’t true.

I do my best to foster healthy and responsible attitudes in both my children. But Mom and Dad can't always be around 24/7 to protect them.

Stop blaming the parent. Teens need to be held accountable for the decisions that they make. Don’t stereotype all parents. Teenagers often rebel against their parents. Teens care more about what their peers say then their parents. Don't assume because a teen makes an unhealthy decision that it's the result of their upbringing.

Raising teenagers is difficult and we just have to hope that we have taught them well, and that they will take everything that we’ve told them and make good healthy decisions for themselves.

I Don't Even Know Your Last Name, but Let's Hook Up!

I’m not sure, but I think courtship is dead. The left over ashes are said to be the power of a changing time. Technology alone has it made it to easy to randomly hook up with someone. What happened to getting to know the person? I've been out of the dating scene for a very long time, but I do remember quite well what dating and the dating scene was like. It was nothing like today's culture. Call me old fashioned, call me what you will, but I believe that a young man should earn a young woman's respect. Be sure to read my latest essay entitled " I Don't Even Know Your Last Name, but Let's Hook Up!: Teen Relationships."

Next Mood Swing: 6 Minutes

Ah, another blog entry. I know I'm a blog addict, maybe I'm even a blog whor- oh my let us keep this G- rated. Fans of Mickey Mouse may be reading. I am very moody lately and snap at the smallest things. If you don't believe me, email my husband. I'm so moody, that he's been hiding. I'm just joking! I mean, seriously though. Don't you just hate rapid mood swings. You go from laughing, to crying, to eating a bunch of hostess chocolate ho ho's. It could just be the winter blues or it could be the stress that I'm under. Maybe I just need to vent more.

My daughter has ate my last chocolate ho ho. Kyros wants to know if I purchased my comma protection today? He says that he understands comma condoms go on sale today. Oh yes, everyones a comma-median. Go ahead, laugh it up. I'm just having a nervous break down because I'm stressed, out of chocolate and commas are driving me insane.

Next mood swing: 6 minutes.

Anonymous Coward

I received two anonymous emails through my feedback form concerning the website motherinlawstories. The first message came as an invite to submit my story there. I registered at the site. However, after careful thinking, I decided not to post, as I don’t have to tolerate my mothers-in-law. Therefore, I do not need a support group.

Now the second email that I received today upsets me. Again it came as an anonymous email. The email mentions how this website hates Christians and anyone who is pro-life. The anonymous individual suggested that I join under an anonymous name so that the members there would be unable to attack my website.

They mention how this community needed someone who would debate controversial issues and not back down.

I guess they believed that I would be that person.

Today I want to tell you three things about me.

1.I believe in God
2.I’m pro-life
3.I do not hide behind anonymousity. What’s the point of stating an opinion if you won’t stand behind your word? I tend to believe that anonymous debaters are cowards.

Whatever you believe, you cannot make people believe the way that you do. I do not wish to get into a debate regarding abortion. I've voiced my opinion on this topic again and again. I have no desire to engage in a debate with pro-choicers. My aim is to educate as many people as I can about abortion.

I cannot outlaw abortion. I cannot change the opinion of pro-choicers. But, perhaps one young girl will decide to keep her baby on account of something that I've written.

Anyway, feel free to comment on this blog post or disregard this as you see fit.

I’ve voice my opinion. One must take the steps to prevent abortion and that is through education, not forum debates.

Respect is a Two Way Street

We have a world where many individuals show no appreciation to others. They take things for granted. They are dependant on the fact that they feel they are owed things. They want nothing more than to live in a society where everything is 'free.'

It's been said, "You can catch more flies with sugar than vinegar." However, I've seen many individuals only reply on vinegar. If you want my respect, use sugar. Save the vinegar for your French fries.

Shall I remind you that respect is a two-way street, but apparently not for some.

While some may protest that respect is owed to them, you only get respect when you show respect.

The Challenge of Being a Parent.

I love my children, but being a parent can be so hard! It's not easy, but what in life is? You want the best of everything for your kids. When I decided to have children, I commited myself to them. That includes protecting them from the things that could harm them.

People said it would get easier when the children got older. Guess what, they lied. I'm not sure if I'll make it through the teen years with my sanity intact.

Today I had to make a descision that would affect my daughter's life. I won't get into the details, but I had to do what was best for my daughter. I had second thoughts, because I hated to see her cry. Part of my conscious told me that it was her life. The other part of my conscious told me that this isn’t healthy.

Eventually I had to put my foot down and be Mom. I knew that it would hurt and she might hate me for it. I was willing to accept the consequences. At the same time, I thought that by 18, she might talk to me again.

Then tonight she said something that made me cry. She said, “Mom I don't hate you for what you've done, I thank you for it."

While I know that I need to give her room to make choices and decisions, how do I prevent her from making unhealthy ones that will affect the rest of her life?

I hope that I'm able to help her become the beautiful, independent woman that I know she is capable of becoming.

It's not easy being Mom. I love my children but some days I wish I could go back and be the daughter.

Water Flows

Thought For The Day - Giving life to Others

My friend Pete once said to me," Do you know why the Dead Sea is dead?" I replied,"no why?" He said, "Well, because the water flows only one way. It does nothing but take, like many people we know. You are more like the Atlantic. You both take and give. Therefore you thrive and give life to others. Think of this analogy when ever you feel down and if anyone gives a damn."

It's nice to know that someone sees me as the Alantic. We can make a big difference in life. Our kind actions do affect others . Through giving, I've found that my life has meaning.

Actor Don Knotts dies at 81

By now you have most likely heard the news that the great comedy actor , who kept generations of television audience laughing has died from lung cancer at age 81. Throughout the years gave us some wonderful characters like Deputy Barney Fife and Ralph Furley on such shows as ' The Andy Griffith Show' and 'Three's Company.' In recent years Don's voice could be heard in cartoons such as Chicken Little, where he played the voice of Mayor Turkey Lurkey. Don Knotts will be truly missed but his spirit will live on in laughter for generations to come.

Trolls Launch Gossip Magazine

The cover story of this week’s gossip magazine is titled “Thoughts and Considerations: trolls, flame wars, & cyberstalkers.” As the prepare to launch their new blog, guess who is the staring attraction. Yes, you guessed it. Me!

Everyone gets a chance in the spotlight at some point in their lives; you can all have your turn as I'm done. I never subscribed to a certain individuals issues, but I have received a number of unwanted copies to their low readership gossip magazine, which met with my garbage disposal. I dispose such hatred.

Like dogs wagging their tongue, give them the alpo and they will come running. We as adults, go on with daily lives. Wining and complaining and holding grudges are for not social want to be yups.

They might try to ignore my opinion, but it is here. I’m behind the clouded view that they have made in their mind. Words and self hatred is a powerless weapon. When you take away their weapon, which is their very small audience, they become helpless.

Tomorrow in their world, nothing will change. I’ll still be on the cover of their gossip magazine, but I’ll smile and turn a deaf ear. Why? Because, I’m able to see the purpose that it serves. I hope that my blog readership will also be able to.

The two blogs in question are fine examples of . After viewing both of these blogs, I have come to the conclusion that neither of the blogs offer a single shred of substance to the blogging community.

They are nothing more than juvenile taunts. The purpose that both of these blogs serve is the individuals desire to win over their readership. Their primary focus is on how to convince their readership to believe as they do.

Those close to me know who I am and what I’m about. Let them have their say. Whatever is good for the ratings, I guess.

It's pointless to engage in a debate with either of these individuals. In my opinion while we may have a right to say whatever we want, we should not be given the right to say it wherever we want. I believe that blogs here at blogger.com should add some substance to the blog community and serve a purpose. Should you stumble upon these blogs, I encourage you not to respond. Not only do the live under a bridge, they live under a dark cloud of dark cloud of denial that seems to loom over head whenever they blog about me.

Hatred is the coward's revenge for being intimidated.

Now 106 are either damaged or destroyed. There were 45 total collections damaged -- some completely or partially lost," says Rebecca Hamilton, State Librarian for Louisiana. When a Boy Becomes a Man

There are many women and men in this world who have not established their role in society as adults. While the young boy may physically be maturing into a young man, until he takes responsibility for his actions, he is still a boy. Men don't run from their problems. A man faces what he has done. Although some males may feel that they are young men, truth is they are still boys. They will no doubt never become men. The saying is” Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad.” Just because you have matured physically into adulthood, it doesn't make you an adult. What separates the boy from the man - responsibility.

What's New in This Writer's Life

Good Day, but Busy. I accomplished a whole bunch of work the past couple of days and feel great. My mind is where it should be and not on annoying distractions. Distractions like that mostquito that won't leave you alone. You know the one that keeps buzzing around your head until you squish it with a huge fly swatter before it sucks you dry. Ya those are the ones. Say Bye Bye to the annoying mosquito. "wicked grin"

Where was I? Oh ya, I’ve been busy making some drastic changes to Today’s Woman. In addition to that, my husband and I have some new projects under way. Where do I find the time? Thank goodness that I’m good at multi tasking. I was just informed that I’ve been made moderator of a forum. Unbelievable!

In addition, I’ve just joined http://www.activeauthors.com/ . I was very impressed with the layout of their website. I look forward to contributing articles.

Can you believe this? I’ve been accepted to contribute to “My Kids are Pigs.” I can’t wait to get started. I’m so excited that I just took a bunch of photos of my daughter’s bedroom.

Every now and then I do an online search on my name. Jody Kuchar gave me a compliment in her blog. Thank you Jody.

I received an email from Heather Jacobson founder of http://www.valleyva.net/ . Every week she features buisness owners in her newsletter that goes out to 300 + subscribers. On Tuesday she is featuring me. Thank you Heather. I'm flattered.

Smiling big- Flattery makes me happy. One of Today’s Woman contributing freelance writers was very impressed with the work that I do. He sent me a letter thanking me for being professional. Well if that doesn’t top of a great day, I don’t know what does. Thank you Ed.

Well this writer best get back to work.

I'm feeling happy and accomplished.

The Perfect Man

In response to a comment left on "No Prince Charming - You’ve got to be kidding me"

ElementalGarden said...
I pity you since you obviously haven't found your Prince Charming. In stead of finding the 'perfect man' (I agree, such a man does not exist), find the 'perfect for you man'. I found my Prince, and yes, he has flaws, but that's what makes him perfect for me. If he didn't have flaws, then he wouldn't be with me.

ElementalGarden, there is no such thing as perfect, therefore how can the perfect man exist. He doesn’t. I however am married to my soul mate and have been happily married for 17 years. I accept him for who he is. He isn’t perfect but neither am I.

He isn’t Prince Charming but that is ok because I’m not Cinderella. We are not living in a castle and there is no glass slipper.

We are living in a three bedroom house bringing up two teens. Between cooking, cleaning and playing referee to our teens, we still have time for romance. Life is good and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Ps: I don't need to be pitied. I need a hot tub, a back rub and a weekend alone with my husband without the children.

Wake Up Cinderella - Happily Ever After

The perfect Prince Charming remains a character in the hearts of women every where. We all know the old modern day fairy tale where Cinderella meets Prince Charming and lives happy ever after. Life is perfect.

Happily ever after? Perfect prince? Wait, we women of today know this isn’t how the story goes. Do you suppose if Cinderella knew what she knew now, she would trade in her glass slipper?

There's a happy-ever-after-land, in the heart of every woman. You’re never too old to believe in the magic of finding that special someone. But love is more than sheer romance and since it is, don’t let yourself get trapped in a world of myths. Life is about more than waiting for that prince. Read more

Flame Wars and Internet TRolls

Yesterday, I got publicly flamed on a blog. The blog post contained many personal attacks towards me, my husband, and my two teen children.

It was very unprofessional and somewhat laughable, as the individual insists that I made my husband and children up.

I’m only mentioning this , as his wife has attempted to bring it here via comments to my blog. Shoot fly don’t bother me!

Flame wars have no place here. I won’t approve such comments nor will I partake in a flame war.

Seeing Life Through the Eyes of a Child: Thought of the Day

A poem written by Orin D Griffin entitled "The Childs Eye" reminded me that children see the world differently than adults do. As adults we become blinded by fear. When we look out our window, we see suffering caused by man’s deliberate actions; therefore we are unable to see the beauty in God's tapestry. When children view the world, they admire the allurement of life. Children stop to admire the beauty of a rainbow, pick dandelions from the backyard, and play in mud puddles. To a child, the world is one of discovery and learning. From a child’s perspective, the world that they live in is a beautiful place. A child does not worry about tomorrow; they only live for today. Children can be wonderful teachers. We only need to listen. It’s never too late to live your life differently. Today view the world through the eyes of a child.

Thought of the Day: The Mother-Daughter Bond

I lost my mother December 2nd 2004, after her long battle with diabetes. My mother was a strong, unselfish, funny, caring, and loving woman. She would never turn anyone away if they needed support. She was always there for me. She was the wind that guided me across a stormy sea.

Over the years, however, diabetes took its toll. She developed kidney and hearts problems and had a stroke that left her confine to a wheel chair.

We had always been close and her health had slowly declined over the course of four years. I watched diabetes take her from a 180 lb woman to a 90 lb woman.

My mother fought hard through her battle with diabetes and I was there every step of the way. It was hard to watch her endure such pain and suffering. Many times I felt helpless though just having me there was enough to give her the strength that she needed to fight.

Every time the phone rang, I thought “don’t let her died.” I don’t know if I was being selfish but I wanted my mother to live, despite knowing that she was in a great deal of pain.

I just wasn’t ready to let her go.

Being with my mother through those few years was a time of great love. It has made me look at my life differently. It made me see my husband and my children differently. I now know the true meaning of family, love, and responsibility.

My mother had a tremendous amount of courage. Her life stretched out past her doctor’s prognosis. Even the doctors couldn’t understand what gave her the willpower to keep fighting and living.

It was the relationship of mother and daughter. The close bond that we shared made her fight.

Through all my mother’s pain and suffering though, I realize that even I couldn’t understand the full extent to what she was going through or what she was thinking. I do know that she loved me and needed me as much as I love and needed her.

When I got the call on December 2nd, I knew that the night I was dreading had arrived. I rushed to be by her side at the hospital. When I entered the hospital room, it took everything in me not to cry at that moment. I talked to her and stroked her hand, telling her that God was with us, that I would be ok and that she didn’t need to fight anymore.

She looked at my brother, my husband and then into my eyes. Though she couldn’t speak, I knew she was saying “I love you, be strong.” She looked towards the hospital ceiling and then she was gone.

My tears flowed at that moment, just like they are flowing now. Those last moments in the hospital room will remain with me as long as I live.

I can't describe the pain that I still feel when I think about my Mother.

My mother taught me so much about life. She really did have the recipe for the good life. I always took refuge under her wings. With her I felt safe and loved. My brother describes our relationship as “never letting go of Mommy's apron strings." I hate to admit it but he is right.

Like everything else in life, death is not easy to accept. There are no wrong reactions to death and everyone grieves differently. No one can tell you that they understand or how long you should grieve or that they are in a better place.

Reactions can change from hours, to days, to weeks, to months. At one moment you think that you have it all together and the next moment, you find yourself crying and needing for someone, anyone to listen.

My mother played a big role in my life. I miss her. I would give anything to pick up the phone and just hear her voice on the other end. But that isn’t going to happen. I will always have my memories. Death does not take those away, which brings me to my thought of the day.

Quote: “Love is stronger then death even though it can't stop death from happening, but no matter how hard death tries it can't separate people from love. It can't take away our memories either. In the end, life is stronger than death.”

Paint Shop Pro Designs

I've been using Paint Shop Pro for eleven years, starting with version six. I've used it to create graphics for many personal and commercial websites. Paint Shop Pro is a wonderful photo/design program. My only complaint is that I don't get enough time to play around in it. Here is a custom header that I designed for my blog in Paint Shop Pro. The header graphic is from a royality free Paint Shop Pro tube. The background is from Senor Dominey's Scribe template. The design was created by yours truly.

New Haircut, New Woman!

I got my hair cut yesterday. It was a little more than halfway down my back and now it goes to just below my jaw line. It doesn’t look bad, but will definitely take some getting used to.

Forced Abortion and Sterilization in China

While waiting to see the doctor, I was reading an article in Time magazine on the subject of force abortions in China. In an attempt to control population, China has a one child policy, which was established in 1979. This policy has now had a negative effect as women are being forced to undergo sterilizations and abortions.

In the article that I was reading, women spoke of how they were held down and doctors stuck them with needles to induce abortion. Some women were in their eighth month of pregnancy. One woman spoke of how a group of men penned her down and injected a poison filled needle into her stomach. After the baby was delivered, to insure that she was dead, they held the baby in a bucket of water that was next to the bed.

I had no idea that forced abortions were taking place in China. This is such a tragedy. It is insane and if you ask me, very, very sad and inhuman.

Mother's Intuition- A Mother's Greatest Fear

They say that Mothers have an intuition and maybe they do. In 1992, I had a dream that my daughter was going to die. That night I woke to my husband screams, she had stopped breathing. That was the beginning to what would become a mother’s worst nightmare. A few weeks later she passed away during open heart surgery. The day that she died, I prayed with my heart and soul for God not to take her, but he did. Call it Mother's intuition, call it a six sense, I don’t really care what you call it, but I just had this feeling that she was going to die.

My daughter Katie was only given to me for a little while, but the love that she brought to my life will last a lifetime.

Through my children I've learned to embrace each day. So clearly in my mind, I still see my daughter’s face. In such a short time I experienced joy and sorrow. I know in my heart the lesson God was trying to teach me.

Cherish your children, never take them for granted, enjoy each day that you spend with them and most important of all tuck them in bed each night for as long as they will let you, because children grow up too quickly.

Babies don’t keep.

Shoo Fly Don’t Bother Me

Lastnight I received a comment on one of my blog entries that I have chosen not to publish. It looks like someone has found a new and annoying way to aggravate me. They are doing so by abusing the comment feature.

I have no intention of starting a flamewar with this individual, so I do hope that she keeps her opinion out of my blog. Frankly I’m tired of listening to her whining. I've been around long enough to know, you made your bed you lie in it.

Before leaving a comment, please note that I may or may not publish it.

I love the comment moderation feature that Google Blogger gives you. One click of a mouse and it’s it goodbye little pesky critter.

“What a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.”

This quote brings me to, “my thought of the day.” Why is it that some individuals will lie, manipulate, and deceive others for personal gain and they feel that they’ve done nothing wrong.

I’ll leave you readers thinking about that question.

Shoo, fly, don't bother me, Shoo, fly, don't bother me, Shoo, fly, don't bother me.

Never Let Go of Hope

Have you ever had that sinking feeling? Some say that it’s ever man for himself. Who cares about those that they leave behind in the wake of disaster? These past few weeks I have felt like a passenger on a cruise ship such as the Titanic. Everyone is in such a hurry to get off the sinking ship that their not helping anyone else. The only thing left for me to do is pray and hold on.

Blog Your Way to Better Writing

While reading an article on blogspot.com, it occurred to me that Wayne Hurlbert was correct. Blogging does improve your writing skills. I started blogging about my life in July of 2005.

The more I blog, I found that I was beginning to put some thought into my blog posts. My friends have started commenting on my blog, which has given me incentive to keep blogging. I was even contacted by a couple fellow bloggers who requested to reprint some of articles in their blog.

Some of my simple short blog entries have developed into articles as I begin to expand on my thoughts. I find myself constantly checking my spelling and my grammar. I have visited many blogs and while some are used as personal diaries, the others are used as article directories.

Blogs offer many more features than a standard webpage does not. Such as blog ping, trackback, blog comments, faster indexing and repeat visitors.

A blog ping is when you write a new entry in your blog, you can set addresses to sites like Ping-O-Matic which tells them that you have just updated your blog.

Wikipedia.org defines trackback as - TrackBack is a system implemented by Movable Type and later adopted by many blogging tools, including TypePad, BoastMachine, WordPress, and Nucleus, that allows a blogger to see who has seen the original post and has written another entry concerning it. The system works by sending a 'ping' between the blogs, and therefore providing the alert.

I never thought that blogging would be so much fun. I have been administrating Todays-Woman.net for three years now and I don’t have a lot of time for writing. Therefore my blog has turned into my own personal journal, where I can practice my writing by posting a log of my daily life and blog about my thoughts and feelings.

I admit that when I first started blogging, I was uncomfortable about strangers reading my daily thoughts. But now even my most insane posts like “Wee Willie Warmers “receive feedback.

My problem with staying motivated and fulfilling my goals was my own failure. I had not taken time away from a daily life that I had come accustomed to. While I love administrating Todays-Woman.net, I realize that I need to take more time to explore myself as writer.

My writing has improved in leaps and bounds over the past year. I owe some of that credit to myself, some to my proofreader, and some to my members. But I owe the rest to blogging. By forcing myself to write everyday, I have become a better writer.

I have taken some time each day to just write.

I would like to challenge everyone to blog everyday this year. If you don’t already have a blog you can create one at Blogger.com.

For a highly recommended reading, I suggest that you surf on into Wayne Hurlbert’s blog and read his June 2005 article titled “Better writing through blogging.”

Blogging is certainly the wave of the future.

Today my children joined the ranks of blogging. Both of my teens have just created blogs here at blogspot and will be updating them under parent supervision. I think that it will be great for my son- who has considered journalism as a career. My son can use his blog to fine tune his journalism skills and my daughter can use her blog to practice writing and her communication skills.

Get Blogging - It's the cool thing to do.

Living On The Edge

A place for everything and everything in its place.

My daughter’s obsession for facing the shelves is driving me nuts. At home she moves everything to the front edges of the dresser, shelf, or desk. Maybe her next job should be stocking shelves at Walmart. She has the technique for facing the shelves down pat.LOL

Rose DesRochers's Blog: A Case of Copycat Blogging

How do you know when another writer envious you?

When she has stooped so low, that the result is copycat blogging.

Such behavior as this is nothing new for this woman. She began submitting reprint articles to ezines around the same time as me and Instead of thinking up her own ideas- she wrote about the same topics that I did.

I’m not sure if I’m angry or flattered. I’m not going to link to the blog of the offending party. That would be giving her more attention than she deserves. While the Blogger did not copy the content of my blog, she copied my ideas.

At least I'm original. Think about how terrible it would be to live the copycat's life.

The Perfectionist Child

My son does very well in school but when he makes mistakes, he is very hard on himself. His teachers have tried to talk to him about it and so have my husband and I, but it doesn’t appear to make much difference. I was reading up about the characteristics of gifted children on Carol Bainbridge’s website http://www.giftsforlearning.com . Perfectionism appears to be one of the traits. Now, how do I help my son learn that it’s ok not to be perfect? Sigh!

Today I Feel Like a Glo Worm

I spent my afternoon at the’ Nuclear Medicine' Department of the hospital. I had my bone scan done. This consisted of a small amount of radioactive material being injected into a vein in my hand.

They normally do the arm but couldn't get a vein there. After the injection, I went home for an hour and a half and had to drink lots to flush the radioactive substance through my system.

I then returned and they did the actual bone scan. It took about two hours. I guess it takes up to 24 hours for the radionuclide to get out of my system.

Hmm, maybe I should walk into a dark room now and see if I glow. LOL

Anyway, now I'm just waiting for the results. Which, I’m anxious to get back.

Oh Those Spelling Errors

Please make it stop.

affect, effect
to, too
buy, by, bye

Oh those spelling errors woes. I am here to confess my sin. Oh the shame. I just typed complement, when I meant compliment.

Talk about Grrrrrrrrrr moments. Don't you hate those pesky little words that sound alike, but have different meanings and spellings.

compliment and complement.

compliment - an expression of praise or admiration
complement - something that completes or makes perfect

I hate homophones.

I due oh how I due, I mean I do hate homphones.LOL

I'm not sure how many times I've said, Please bare with us. I do believe that it's, please bear with us.

Many of my grammatical errors are the result of homophones. Like Sense vs since.

Sense - meaning feel
Since- refers to passage of time

I need to slap myself or is that I need too slap myself. Quick, I need a refresher lesson on the basics of homophones.

My next blog entry - Where do I stick that comma?

Health Care Woes

I went to the clinic this evening. The doctor believes that the other clinic never sent a referral to a rheumatologist. I should have had an x-ray and bone scan done on my ankle in June. However, none was done. I have to have a bunch of blood work done tomorrow and then an x-ray on my ankle. The doctor has already gone ahead and made the referral for the bone scan. So now, it is a matter of having the test done and waiting for the results. I have a busy week ahead of me.

Feeling Like a Newlywed - Recipe for a Happy Marriage.

Every woman needs romance in her life. Shawn and I have a wonderful marriage but we live a very frantic life. We have two children, two businesses that we run and by the end of the day we are exhausted. We realized long ago that we need to take time out of our busy day to day routine for each other.

Sometimes we go for a walk or out for a coffee or just relax at home after the kids are in bed.

Lately, I’ve been under a great deal of stress, so last night Shawn planned a romantic evening. He ordered in a nice Chinese dinner, we had a glass of wine and watched a couple of movies and I won’t share the rest of the details.

But it was romantic and an out of the blue surprise. It was a night of pure heaven and I woke up this morning feeling like a newlywed. Most women complain that their husbands takes them for granted. I never have that complaint, as Shawn always puts my feelings first.

In your relationship, it is so important that you make time for each other. It is part of the recipe for a happy marriage.

I love you Shawn.

The Skelton Key

The Skelton Key in my opinion was an excellent movie and one that I highly recommend. It did not have the predictable ending that most movies have. I wouldn’t be so quick to classify it a horror movie though. It was more an edge on your seat suspense. The ending is definitely shocking. Rent this movie--you will not be disappointed.

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO)

My son has been invited to fill out an application for the enrichment program, which is a more challenging curriculum for Grade 7 and 8 students who are ready for enriched studies. If his application is selected he will be chosen to attend separate private school classes. This program is attended for students that have been identified as ‘Intellectually Gifted.’ After a March student interview, those who have been selected for the program will be contacted.

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) is a recognized leader in the field of international education. This enrichment program will prepare him for the International Baccalaureate Programme which is offered to grade 11 and 12 students. The IB diploma gives holders access to the world’s leading universities. The IB diploma is recognized by more than 110 countries.

As a parent, I of course have some concerns with the program. Since this is a decision involving my son's future, I’ll have to give it a great deal of thought before deciding if we’ll be pursuing the IB program.

I'm certainly very, very proud of my son.

Jealousy - Has Raised its Evil Head

I hate jealousy. I feel ill each time that I see it rear its ugly head.

This rant about jealousy comes from an individual who would like nothing better than to see me fail. I have no idea why, but the situation is very real indeed.

This envious person will not work towards accomplishing success. In his own twisted little perspective he believes that he is already successful. He believes that others are envying him.

Jealous people can't stand seeing others doing better than them. Some individuals really do take it to the utmost extremes.

This individual would love for his websites to be as successful as mine but he does not have the skills or no how to make that happen.

His Jealousy is a mixture between envy and his desire to be where I am.

When from the deaths of envy comes hatred, the jealous person will stop at nothing to bring down a colleague.

It's been an extremely eye-opening experience for me to see just how ugly jealousy can become. I’ve seen first hand how jealousy has developed into hateful malicious acts, abusive behavior, and false rumors.

It is not a pretty picture at all. Now with the ability for jealous people to hide behind anonymity on the internet, it enables them to go to greater lengths no matter how damaging to destroy the reputation of a company. Cowards are what they are.

Jealous people certainly don’t impress me. So while I sit back and watch the jealous person spread false rumors and makes false allegations to get him through each meaningless sad day in his life, I continue to run my business as I always have.

The last thing that I wish to do is allow myself to be brought down to a level of hatred. I am proud of my success. I have gotten here by offering others my hand, not kicking them while they are down.

Sad Upsetting News

I got some bad news today. I have been waiting six months to see a rheumatologist. I thought it was an orthopedic surgeon that I needed to see. But the nurse informed me on the phone today that it was a rheumatologist. She had faxed my referral in July to a doctor in Kingston. Today she informs me that doctor can not see me as she is going on Maternity leave. To make matters worse, the referral is no longer any good and I have to go back to the clinic on Saturday to get another referral. She mentioned sending me to Ottawa, Toronto, or Peterborough. Anyway, it is going to be another six months on a waiting list. The chronic pain has become almost unbearable and now to find out that I have to wait another six months and travel such a long way just to see a doctor is very upsetting.

Ihatethis

Kevin is the editor-in-chief of http://www.ihatethis.org , which is the resource for those who want to publish their negative opinion on something or someone.

That gives me an idea, Na I'm not that mean.

So when I first heard of the website, I wondered how long it would be before my name was on there. Someone was sure to send in something that they hated about me.

Well I can now say that my name made the site. As I’m the author of the post,” I hate the “Birth” Movie.”

I have spent a lot of time on the ihatethis website. The site isn’t as bad as I first thought it would be. I actually found myself laughing at some of the submissions, shaking my head at others, and I was inspired to write an essay relating to the topic of school uniforms. So check out ihatethis and submit your rant.

Well, I'm Back.

A much needed vacation has prevented me from spending time on the Todays-Woman website. Therefore, I dedicated today to reading and commenting on my fellow member’s poetry. My first day back to work after vacation has been an enjoyable one. I have read and commented on 64 poems and been motivated to write two of my own. I have missed reading all the talent within the site and I can now say that I’m back to work.

Tomorrow will be dedicated to short stories and articles. I motivated, so look out for some serious reviewing.

Todays-Woman.net Company Spotlight

Todays-Woman.net first opened its doors to web surfers in 2002, at this time it was a woman’s network. Since then it has become a writing community for both men and women, connecting writers from around the world in one virtual space.

Today’s Woman is administrated by me, Shawn DesRochers and Steve Reichard. The community is made up of those looking to be published, hobby writers, published authors, and publishers themselves.

Todays-Woman.net has a full online forum with over 56 communities built inside of it. We have writing lessons, a full directory of links to literacy resources, famous poets, online book store, book reviews, and over 150 calls for submissions to help writers get published, plus many more features. Though the main focus of our community at one time was a poetry community, todays-woman.net is now the online community for creative writing, fiction writing, story writing, poetry writing, writing contests, freelance writing, song writing and all other genes of writing. We have really opened our doors and broaden our selves to more than just poetry.

We have weekly writing contest that spark member’s creativity and we have a variety of writing lessons submitted by experience writers to help the beginning writer fulfill their dreams of publication. I feel that Todays-Woman is a wonderful learning resource for writers.

Todays-Woman also does personal interviews. We have interviewed such big names as artists Phil Roberts and Jonathon Earl Browser, Country singer Andrew Dean and Children's author Robert Munsch.

Administrating Today’s Woman has been a wonderful experience for me. Not only have I made some wonderful friends, my online experience has brought me success.

Todays-Woman has become one of the most visited writing communities on the internet. Ranked 6/10 by Google and 198,925 in Alexa, we continue to be the primary resource for writers, receiving an average of 7,197 to 10,276 hits a day.

Shawn DesRochers extensive developing of Todays-Woman.net has been rewarded with rave media reviews.

Testimonials from the members themselves have been most positive. As of June 1st 2005 Today's Woman now offers members the choice between a free account and premium service.

I truly believe the best of Today’s-Woman.net, is yet to come. Don’t go anywhere as we have only just begun.

Taking Advice to Heart

I'm enjoying my vacation. I've gotten to spend some valuable time with the children and with Shawn. I really need to work on relaxing and winding down. I have let so much pile up. It has stressed me to the point that I was no longer enjoying my online time. I needed the vacation. However, I regret logging on to the computer yesterday and today. Sometimes I feel like a celebrity for once again I made the cover of the Gossip Magazine. As soon as my fingers touched the keyboard, I was defending myself and why? Why did I bother replying?

Todays-Woman.net was built around a hobby, interest and passion for writing. Making it a community takes hard work and dedication. Within the Community, I have the opinion of 664 members. They understand me and I appreciate them for that.

In the blog that I replied to, I only have the opinion of one person and that opinion doesn't even come from someone that knows me on a personal or professional level.

If you could offer one piece of advice to yourself what would it be?

The advice that I would give myself would be, "Rose everyone comes into life with a purpose. You know your purpose. You spend far too much time proving your worth to others. Stop, those who have gotten to know you and respect your talents already support you. Keep the faith in yourself and your community. You are doing your best and for those who appreciate you, that is good enough. Now log off the computer and enjoy the rest of your vacation."

Would you look at that, it's clear that I have actually been listening to my members all along.

Money Can't Buy Love

I was motivated to write this because someone recently insulted me. A few weeks later, he showed up at our door with a Christmas poinsettia and a gift for my son. I couldn’t accept these gifts. All I wanted was an apology. I just wanted him to acknowledge that I was very hurt by his words. I wanted him to know that he couldn’t purchase forgiveness with a gift.

The situation reminded me of a woman who has gone through life thinking that she can buy love and affection. She manipulates everyone around her. What does it mean when a price tag has been set on your own life? Her entire exist is measured by what she can purchase. I can't make sense of it all anymore.

They say absence in ones life makes the heart fonder. In this case, she is asserting her authority with her credit cards because she feels guilty and is trying to make up for the absence by buying love.

“Love is a gift. You can't buy it, you can't find it, someone has to give it to you. Learn to be receptive of that gift.” --Kurt Langner

I realized that the more I think about forgiveness, love and respect the more complex it seems. I have spent too many years trying to please her. This woman is far too judgmental.

The value of her life is measured by what makes her look good. Holidays are about being with family and friends but in her eyes it is about the perfect gift and the perfect meal that makes up for the absence that she has in her family’s life during the entire year.

Some of the most valuable lessons you learn in life are lessons like these. Love, forgiveness, kindness, and respect for others cannot be bought in stores.

Love is not abuse.

Cranium's Award-Winning Games

If you are looking for a fun game to add to your board game collection, I highly recommend Cranium. This game is definitely worth the purchase. My children received this game as a Christmas present and we played it as a family on Christmas Eve. I personally like the singing parts, and the acting parts. It was so much fun to watch my daughter act out karaoke bar and watch my husband act out back seat driver. Of course we all tried to avoid the word-worm card. My son hated spelling those words backwards as much as I hated drawing with my eyes closed. We all learned that my son is a terrible hummer. This was a game that challenges us but had us all laughing. No matter what your talent is, you will love this game as it incorporates drawing, singing, Trivia and spelling. Purchase Cranium today and then grab your family for hours of outrageous fun.

Rose DesRochers

From Toysrus.com & Amazon.com

Editorial Review

Spell a word backwards, hum a tune, answer a multiple-choice question, draw with your eyes closed, and more when you play Cranium. Unlike games that focus on only a few skills, Cranium offers 14 talent-tapping activities designed to bring out the best in you and your friends. Cards from four decks, color-coded to match each of the crazy characters--Star Performer, Creative Cat, Data Head, and Word Worm--describe activities that teams must complete in order to advance around the board. If you choose a Sculptorades card from the Creative Cat deck, for example, you might be asked to sculpt a hamburger from lemon-scented Cranium Clay while your teammates try to guess what you're creating.

To win the game, teams have to make it to Cranium Central--the large purple brain in the center of the board--and then successfully complete one activity from each of the four decks. The result is that the team with the best combination of abilities comes out on top. With its wonderfully diverse set of activities and top-notch design (artwork by illustrator Gary Baseman decorates the colorful board and decks of cards), Cranium offers the best of all board game experiences--and it's a whole lot of fun, too! (For 4 or more players)

I Can't Imagine Life Without Him.

Rose and Shawn DesRochers

Statistics show as nearly 60% of teenage marriages fail within the first five years. It's difficult to tell a teen that their love isn't going to last. For a lucky few their marriages stand the test of time.

Shawn and I were young when we married. Our faith in each other and our commitment to our marriage has been strong enough to survive the hand that life has dealt us. We have had our struggles and after 17 years of marriage, my husband and I are more in love than ever.

Another one bites the dust

I swear I get the strangest IM's ever or maybe I’m the strange one. My moderator Penny suggested that I write a booklet on how to handle mashers, wolves, idiots and basic jerks who IM me, hoping to get a rise out of me.

Perhaps that is something that I could do. I wonder if a book regarding men and the internet would go over well. What about permission, you know copyright issues. Would I need to go to the loser and say, might I make a fortune out of your stupidity.

Anyhow, here is one conversation from November.

torontomale4fun: Hi there, do you like to dress sexy when you go shopping?
Rose: Hi There, no I like to dress as a man when I go shopping.
torontomale4fun: lmao
torontomale4fun: so what do you wear?
Rose: An old lumber jacket, jeans and wearing a baseball cap—along with a couple days beard growth.
Rose: I'm a truly ugly woman who enjoys dressing like a man.
Rose: Maybe my crossdressing is me trying to get in touch with my masculine side or perhaps I have been hit on by so many male egotistical pigs I wanted to know what it would be like to dress as one when I went shopping. In any event my children and husband suport my crossdressing. How did you know that I like to dress as a hot sexy male when I go shopping?
Rose: Hello torontomale4fun are you there? oh my is a cross dressing male not what you had in plan for fun? Oh no where did you go?
Rose: Eek, I think that he blocked me. Another jerk bites the dust. News at 5.

Random Acts of kindness

As an incentive motivator at my son’s school, when students get perfect on their weekly spelling test, they receive points. The points can later be used as cash.

Yesterday my son came home from school and handed me this little guy.

I just started crying and gave him a big hug.

There is no limit to how we touch people’s lives. My son touched mine with the surprise of my new bear. Now each time that I look at him sitting on my computer tower, I’ll think of my son’s random generosity. My son sets a fine example for everyone to follow, as he puts others before himself.

"No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted"

Today I will commit a random act of kindness, will you?

I'm going to be very busy, the next week or two. Shawn and I are going to take a few days off. I want to take the kids skating and tobogganing. We put up our Christmas tree yesterday.

We really need to get those outdoor lights up. We were going to do it today but Shawn’s Aunt and Uncle stopped in for coffee. So I'll have to add that to our to-do list. Everyone knows the stress from last-minute shopping, and every year I say, “I’m going to finish my shopping early this year” and every year I wait until the last minute. So Tuesday it is off to the stores. I’m dreading it but I only have half of the children’s list left to pick up.

Well I better get my Today’s Woman newsletter out. High Ho High Ho. Yup, it's back to work I go!!!

Christmas Pageant

Tonight, the church had their Christmas pageant performance of Candy Cane Lane. I've never enjoyed a Christmas program as much as this one. My proudest moment came towards the end of the pageant, when my son had his moment to shine. My son was playing the role of a train conductor named Casey. He sang the song, “You Gotta Grow.” I thought the children all did a great job and all in all, “The Christmas pageant” was an enjoyable evening. He has two more performances on Sunday. It is so hard to believe that another year is almost over. I will probably post some pictures of the tree tomorrow.

Grinch Steals Christmas!!

Christmas, is normally the season of joy. The city gets brighter, with outside lights and Christmas displays. But the mood in the Quinte area is one of disappointment and for good reasons. The Grinch is stealing our holiday spirit. A number of outside Christmas ornaments are being taken from displays. It’s really sad that some thief would do this at Christmas time. I'm sure that this is all some prank, but the residents of Quinte are not laughing.

As The Years Pass By

Today was a tough day for me, because it's the anniversary of my Mother's death. Today marks four years since my mother passed away, but today also marks 17 years that my husband and I have been together. Though I mourn and grieve my Mother’s absence, I celebrate the love of my husband. I thank him for his understanding, affection, and moral support; and above all for loving me. Love is hard to find and I believe once you find it, it is worth keeping.

Never Can Say Goodbye

Tomorrow is the anniversary of my Mother's death. I watched the battle that my Mother went through, trying to live one day to the next. In the end it left her wishing for death, but she held on for me. They say that time is the healer. I have come to terms with the reality of her death. I think I'm able to accept the changes. But, I'm not able to say, goodbye Mom. My Mother's death has affected me a great deal. I know that few people can understand my grief. On the 4th year of her anniversary, I can honestly say that I'm able to cope. But I don't think my pain of loosing her or the grief will ever fade.

The Surgeon Shortage

There is a shortage of orthopedic surgeons in Canada, according to an article that appeared in the Toronto Star. There is a year wait, just to see the surgeon. This isn’t good, especially when you can’t sleep at night because of the pain. I have already been on the waiting list six months to see an orthopedic surgeon. The medication helps the pain for now, but there may be long-term consequences and side-effects from the drug. With a Critical shortage of orthopedic services in Ontario, I guess there isn’t much I can do but play the waiting game, and a painful game it is.

Hello! Typo Queen Here

Talk about typos! I just sent out my Today's Woman Writing Community newsletter and I wrote, "We hope you'll find the information provided within Today's Woman useful and we home that you will benefit from what we have shared with you." Home, that should of been hope. That is what I get for not proofreading before send. Well at least I caught it before someone told me about it and I can laugh at my self.

Anonymous Coward

"Anonymous Coward,” if you own a blog, you most likely know the definition of this term. Everyone deals with anonymous comments left in their blog. However anonymous comments left in the form of an attack, are seen as nothing more than a cowardly act. I use my real name in all correspondence, and make no attempt to hide behind anonymity. If you have an opinion to leave in my blog, I ask you to leave your name and web url. If you don't leave your name and address, I’m going to assume that you have nothing of intelligence to add to any of my posts. Therefore, I’m only going to trash your comment. I have no time for the anonymous coward. We all have freedom of speech, but with that freedom comes responsibility. Freedom of speech was intended for far nobler purposes than defending some anonymous posters disruptive behavior. The fact that they must hide their opinion behind anonymity doesn’t say much for their character. That is just my opinion.

I’m a Responsible Adult

Responsibility is suppose to come with age. However what we have is a society of irresponsible adults who blame others for all the unwanted results is their life. There is nothing like watching a good old adult tantrum. Age is an irrelevant factor in the ability to be responsible.

Sadly today’s child is the victim of these irresponsible adults. It is true that children watch their parents, and other adults, for clues on how to behave. You start being an adult when you decide to take responsibility for your life and if you can't take responsibilty for your life as an adult, what kind of message are you sending to the eyes watching you.

Think of children as young adults in training. As parents we mold them into responsible adults. We begin to teach our children to become responsible at an early age.

It just really saddens me to see some parent's so blind. Unfortunately, many parents nolonger take responsibility for their children. Parents have lost full control over their children and part of that falls on the fact they are not responsible adults themselves.

We all have a responsibility. We as adults choose our behavior, we choose our consequences.

The best way to encourage our children to become responsible is be responsible adults ourselves.

Stepping off my soap box now. LOL

Brace Yourself Folks, We’re Going to Talk Bra

Talk about strange bra news.

November 10th Yahoo news read “A Florida woman has been arrested for padding her bra — with a stolen parrot.”

We have the new microwavable bra - Nov 9,2005 Yahoo news read “For the woman who wants to stay both warm and environmentally conscious this winter -- and isn't bothered by extra bulk under her shirt -- a lingerie maker unveiled a thick bra that can be heated in a microwave.”

Oct 8th 2005, a British woman was saved by her own "bra’. The woman was caught in the crossfire of a gang war. Her life got saved as the bullet hit the underwire of her bra, snapping it, and deflecting away from her chest and I last but not least, I read in the Associated Press that the Chinese are serious about building a better bra .One Chinese university offers a degree in bra studies.

That's your bizarre and wacky bra news for today.

Arrogant Writers

Arrogance seems to have creped into the writing world and instead of helping people improve their writing, some writers only critique people based on grammar and spelling. In my opinion these are writers, who are nothing more than wannabe editors. They are only trying to belittle other writers to make their own writing better. Obviously it’s a power thing that makes them think that they are a professional. So I'll let them continue with the English lesson, while I laugh my way to the bank, with the cheque that I receive from my writing.

Be sure to read my latest article entitled,To Err is Human—to Rewrite is Divine.

It’s time to weed the garden.

I'm starting to dislike people. If I like you then count yourself lucky . You must be one of the very few good people out there. You know what they say, “Ignorant people are like weeds. No matter how hard you try to get rid of them, there are always more.” Oh Well, I guess it’s time to weed my garden.

International Library of Poetry, aka poetry.com Consumer Report

The October issue of the AARP Bulletin is now online. You can read the consume report about poetry dot com written by Sid Kirchheimer at Scam
Alert...Write and Wronged

.

It is somewhat funny that I was misquoted in that article or quoted out of context. I accept responsibility where I may not have made my voice clear enough on the phone to Sid Kirchheimer.I guess there are worse things to rant about than being (mis)quoted by the press, I could be ranting that I wasn't quoted at all. Anyway it was an honor to have been mentioned. A very informative article, be sure to check it out.

WAYN (Where Are You Now)

I recently received an e-mail from someone who has me in their address book, inviting me to join WAYN (Where Are You Now). WAYN is one of the many networking sites like hi5, friendster, Orkut and ringo and I swear if I get another email asking me to join any of them, I’m going to scream. But seriously, these referral networking services are becoming nothing more than inbox nuisances.

Don't Quit- To Whom Does This Poem Belong?

Recently I wrote an article “To Whom Does This Poem Belong,” if you haven’t read it yet it can be read at < Today's Woman Writing Community >. The article is about the beautiful inspiration poem “Don’t Quit,” that a number of poets wish to take credit for writing.

Eric, one of the sources that I credit in my article sent me an email. I just thought that I would quote him. “Thanks, I read your article and liked it. No one alive today could have written that poem as it is way too
old - anyone below nintey to a hundred years old (at least) would have to be a liar. I hate people that try to take credit for what I feel is one of the most inspirational poems written. I have a copy of the poem in my house that my grandparents had long before I was born and I am fifty years old - and the copy I have also has no author on it. My guess would be that it was written at the turn of the century.”

The real author of the poem is still a mystery but as more facts are revealed about the poem, we are learning how quick poets are to take credit for something they didn't write.

Example when I removed a member for plagiarism from the Today’s Woman website she wrote , “I have never ever read this poem you speak of in my lifetime. I sat right here at my computer desk at work and composed it. Whether you choose to believe that or not, I cannot help. But, to accuse me of plagiarism without any proof whatsoever is disgusting. I would never do such a thing. But, now that you have been judge, jury and executioner of me without any due process, I would never want to be a part of TW. How completely absurd of you, Rose, how utterly absurd. This was very low.”

Low is taking a well known poem and pretending that you wrote it. Just because the author is unknown doesn’t mean that you can take credit for writing it.

Just where do some people get off?

I'll get off my soap box now.

Gender Stereotypes

Stereotypes - It is because of these that most people expect certain behaviors from boys, than from girls. Remember the saying “boys don’t cry,” or how about boys shouldn’t play with dolls.

I never realized as a parent that I was putting my daughter in a gender role when I told her that she shouldn’t get her pretty dress dirty. I failed my daughter in the fact that I influenced her into the role that women must look good.

I avoided it with my son, as It's a very strong pet peeve of mine when people make certain arguments to defend the behavior of boys because "boys will be boys."

I didn’t want my son to be in that gender role. I allowed him to play with dolls and hang with the girls and told him it was ok to cry. I encouraged him to sign up for drama and told him their was nothing wrong with reading 24/7 instead of playing sports.

It was just over the last year that I have encouraged my daughter to take part in sports and tried to gear her away from the gender role, now that I have seen the effect that it has had. But now that I look back, I realize as a parent, I’m partly to blame.

We're all individuals and should not all be judged simply because of skin color, religious affiliation, gender, or age.

Say no to hi5

I've received several invitations from hi5, but I never signed up until today. I should have read the privacy policy before I registered.

It reads

hi5 collects personal information when you register, when you use hi5, when you visit hi5 pages or the pages of certain hi5 partners. hi5 may combine information about you that we have with information we obtain from business partners or other companies. Once you register with hi5 and sign in to our services, you are not anonymous to us. hi5 collects information about your transactions with us and with some of our business partners. hi5 automatically receives and records information on our server logs from your browser.

Basically they have spyware.

hi5 collects your Hotmail or yahoo address lists and contacts. Once you register there is an e-mail that is sent to everyone in your address book. This e-mail is sent without your permission.

The website also requests, your hotmail and yahoo password. I never gave my password, I was not that gullible. However hi5 was still able to gather my information and contact those listed in my address back.

I finally was able to delete my account, through the instructions in their help file.

Hi5 is even worse than xanga and myspace.

I encourage all parents whose children have an account on hi5 to log into hi5 and delete their children’s account.

Too much personal information is being revealed on these websites, making it a haven for sexual predators. Parents need to wake up.

I for one, am very concerned with websites like hi5 that encourage children to post their photos and personal information.

I strongly suggest that if your child uses the computer and you have not been monitoring their activity, it is time that you found out just what they are doing.

School orders students to remove blogs

I recently read in the news that a Roman Catholic high school in Sparta have ordered its students to remove personal blogs from the Internet in the name of protecting them from cyberpredators. This makes perfect sense to me and I applaud the principle for the action that he is taking. The Internet is a "Gateway" which leads the adult predator to the child.
Parents need to recognize the better need to monitor their children’s online activity,

Websites like xanga, myspace, and livejournal, make it all too easy for sexual predators of children to prey on our children.

Children are vulnerable and they don’t realize that anyone can and most likely is reading their blog entries. It is up to us as parents to educate them and monitor them.

Harassment from an Author

I have been receiving a large amount of harassing unwanted e-mail from an author who claims that he is a professional writer. Today I sent him one email that requests he stop emailing me or I will report him to his ISP provider. What kind of person harasses someone to this extent? He must have a lot of time on his hands. This author’s harassing emails include the link to his book publisher. I have emailed his book publisher to make them aware that he may just be violating their toss agreement.

Sexist Advertising

I find it very offensive to see women being portrayed as sex objects. Selling sex is the way to sell a product in today's society. Today I received an advertisement for a loan (grant). In the advertisement was a woman in a bikini. Someone needs to slap the media upside the head. News flash, women have more worth beyond being sex objects and a tool to sell products. With all these ads that negatively portray women, we don't have a prayer in hell for the future. Media has created the stereotypes and sexism in our culture.

Feeling worthless

Have you ever met someone who makes you feel less of a person. You know very well that you're not. But when you are around this person you lack self-confidence. I mean this person actually makes me feel worthless. Maybe it is my low self-esteem, I feel I'm allowing this person to walk all over me. I'm very proud of my accomplishments and what I have done, but I can't help feel a great deal of humiliation around this person. They just make me feel worthless.

What I've learned on Todays-Woman.net

I am trying to please everyone, all of the time-which of course, is impossible to do. That reminds me of a quote.

You know, you can't please all the people all the time... and last night, all those people were at my show. -Mitch Hedberg American comedian (1968 - 2005)
